UK news highlights
The main stories
The completion of the Infrastructure Bill in the Lords was followed by an immediate first reading (with no debate) in the House of Commons, illustrating how desperate the government is to pass this law, which will strip landowners of legal rights to prevent fracking under their land. This was followed by the announcement that the government is to pay for, at taxpayers' expense, hundreds of drillings to accommodate seismic measuring equipment.
This raises a serious question whether the government has any mandate to do the work of the fracking companies for them. This is a precedent which needs public scrutiny.
